Marc did an excellent job of addressing the issue I had with the toilet in my main bathroom. Before starting the work, we discussed different options and he explained everything in detail. He also provided several quotes. He did a plumbing camera inspection to ensure there were no problems in the sewer line and also installed a new toilet. He is very knowledgeable, a great communicator and detail oriented with his paperwork. You won’t be disappointed when you work with Marc!

Great job installing our garage fawcett with indoor shut off valve. Very difficult area to get to in the basement rafters and they improved on the builders installation greatly. Very happy with the work and speed with which it was completed.

We cannot say enough great things about Jason. He did a great job replacing our clay pipes with PVC pipes, with his workmates, Tom and Pat. The weather conditions they worked under were not pleasant at all. It was cold, and they were covered in mud , but never complained. All the men that worked here were always smiling and always friendly. They are very hardworking men under less then ideal conditions. We read the reviews ahead of time and they almost sounded to good to be true. Well, we are here to say those reviews are true as well as is this one. Everyone we were in contact with at Thos. R. Jeff and Kellholm both gave me great service and I was very appreciative of all of the information they gave me. Following the job done by Jeff, I can say that Jeff gave me outstanding service that went above and beyond the call of duty. He supplied a missing part of my kitchen faucet and did a fantastic job replacing all of my house's old galvanized plumbing pipes throughout the basement. I highly recommend Jeff; I hope that Thos R. Birnie & Sons Ltd. management will be as professional as Jeff was in the next leg of my journey with them: getting City of Hamilton approval before they replace my lead water line pipes. They helped me out of a very bad frozen pipes situation. Poor guy was under my house in the very tight crawlspace for hours in frigid sub zero weather for hours without a complaint. Got my water running again and gave me information on how to avoid this problem in the future. On top of it all there was a problem with my toilet and after being on site for 6 hours he took the time to fix it before he left. Excellent service. Above and beyond. I would highly recommend this company.

Kyle R. examined our drain, asked if he could use a 2 X 4 that was nearby, poked it into the drain hole and 'whoosh' - 'Drain Cleared' he stated. I was shocked at how simple the operation was, and how deep the drain went into the ground below the cellar floor. Of course, my question was 'what is the charge?' - the answer ..... Purchased a Kinetico water softener and RO system through Costco. Thos R Birnie & Sons were the Kinetico dealer that installed the system. There was a little confusion in the initial visit but Costco, Kinetico and Thos R. Birnie & Sons were great in identifying the problem and getting them to my house for the initial visit. Roy Birnie came out to check out my house and explain the benefits of the Kinetico system. As I've had an older system in my previous house, I didn't really have to be sold on it. Roy was an absolute pleasure to deal with. I had asked them to install the RO unit in the basement instead of the recommended location of under the sink, they went out of their way of installing larger tubing to account for the additional distance from the faucet in the kitchen. John and Roy actually came out to do the install and they were very thorough in checking their work. There was an issue with the holding tank, I'm sure it was a product issue and not an installation one, but they came back right away to get things sorted out. Great work, great to deal with, I would absolutely call them back for plumbing work and absolutely recommend them to others I know. Thanks Roy and John.

Kellholm came out to help me diagnose a problem with the shower drain in my basement bathroom. He was extremely helpful in explaining how the problem needed to be addressed and used plain language to explain it to me clearly. He took the extra step of checking the drain pipes with the camera, which revealed a larger problem outside of the house, but better to know now than when poop is floating in my house. In conversation during his visit, it was clear that Kellholm has more than 1 year of experience, which is what the email notification I got before he came here said. He actually said he's been with this company for several years, in addition to previous experience with the city and other private companies. So don't worry, Kellholm is no rookie! You're in good hands with him.

Waiting on a couple other places for pricing to compare, but if all is the same then I would go with the company Kyle works for. Had a previous experience with them getting a water softener and filter system and they've overall been very pleasant the deal with.

I own a house in Hamilton which is rented out to a family. Their daughter had a bath an water went through the light fixture in the kitchen below. I figured it was probably a problem with the overflow drain and I called this company as I'd seen their trucks around and figured they'd be reliable. I called and spoke to a woman on a Thursday and she told me they wouldn't be able to get to the house before the following Tuesday? This seemed like a long wait but it wasn't an emergency so i agreed to that. I called Tuesday to confirm they were coming and was told the appointment would be for the next day. I arranged for the tenant to be home and she waited without a call or update, as did I. I called them and was told they couldn't make it out until the next day now. This was a full week after I called. The next day Robert came but the water was shut off so he couldn't actually do the work anyway but told me the total cost for the repair (if it was the overflow) would be in the neighborhood of $1000!!!! It would be 175 bucks just to cut a hole in the drywall behind the drain to look at it. I could go on but suffice it to say I found a licensed plumber who charges less than 25% of this company's prices and was available to do the work the next day.

Callum attended and gave a very thorough analysis of what is needed to replace my sewer line. He ran a camera through the sewer line, a water detector to mark off the location where the pipes are and a thorough breakdown of his report. Very pleased with his service.

After contacting Thomas R Birnie & Sons online. I received a phone call Monday morning informing me Jeff would be here within 30 mins. When he arrived he looked at our toilet that had been leaking, our water shut off was seized both at the tank and main. He was well prepared and very knowledgeable. He gave us a quote for the job, plus a few others that we had asked him about. When the jobs were done he cleaned up and explained everything. The float in my toilet was not shutting off and was causing my toilet to continue to run after each flush. In days gone by you could just adjust the float. My 5 year old top of the line, low water level system required a plumber. I called Thomas R Birnie & Sons Ltd. The appointment was set, they showed up when they said they would. had the replacement part in his truck, did the work and was in and out in less than 1/2 hour. He also fixed a minor broken screw on a tap (no charge) while he was here. Thank you so much back in good running order.

Thos.R.Birinie & Sons replaced my sewer lateral pipe and my lead pipe in my house. From the get go, they were very prompt with returning my call, as this was an emergency. While other contractors were too busy due to the time of year, they were able to call me back, set up a time for the estimate and perform the required work at a time to fit my schedule. The contractors performing the work were Tom and Patrick. All work areas outside were covered with plywood to protect my front lawn and driveway from any extensive damage. The interior floors and stairs were also covered with rubber sheets. Tom and Pat were very knowledgeable about all things plumbing, and were able to answer all my questions. Upon completion Tom took the time to inspect all pipes for leakage as well as taps for water pressure. He even checked my toilet and helped clean out some of the debris in float in the back of my toilet which often results from working on water pipes, causing the toilet to run. When cleaning up sewer lateral pipe trench it was filled in with gravel, original soil and another big layer of gravel,making the area ready for repaving. Front lawn soil was also filled in, ready for lawn replacement in the small area which was dug up. Very happy with this company and would recommend them to those requiring major plumbing work on their home.

New to Dundas we relied upon ratings and reviews to choose Thomas Birnie to install new toilets and to have as plumbers if we have future problems. Their office was excellent at taking our call and quickly arranging for JEFF to come within a day or so. There were two confirming calls from the office and Jeff was on time and ready to state a flat price and to get going. Within two hours he had picked up the toilets, installed them, and hauled away the old. In all he gave a sense of competence and was pleasant. He cleaned up both areas. We own a century home Hamilton with the original tile sewer line. The sewer line was never cleaned. Needless to say things caught up to us or should I say ‘backed up on us’. Unfortunately I had to have extensive sewer repair done. After Matthew and Josh cleaned the line Kellholm came out to explain what repairs were need to the old line. It was decided that using a liner in our existing sewer instead of replacing the complete sewer line was the best way to go. Patrick and Josh came in to install the liner followed up by Jason for the final inspection. These guys took the time explained every step of the process. Our ancient water heater sprung a leak and we called Thos. R. Birnie & Sons to ask about purchase and installation of a new one. To be honest, they were my second call. Home Depot said it would be 4 days to get a new water heater installed and they could not tell me what it would cost. I called Birnie because of their reputation and fun logo! The receptionist (whose name I forget...sorry!) was cheery and helpful. She explained the process to me and arranged to have a technician come out the next morning. Jeff called about 45 minutes before his scheduled arrival time to confirm the appointment and to say he would arrive in about 40 minutes. It was exactly 40 minutes when he was at our door! He examined the tank and confirmed it should be replaced. He then left, returned with the new heater and installed it all in the same morning. He took the time to explain what he was doing each step of the way and clearly knew his stuff. My laundry room was cleaner when he left than when he arrived! I would not hesitate to call them again. On the first visit a suggestion was made to make changing my drinking water filters easier for me to do myself, but the service person did not have the necessary tubing. So, he said he would come back the next day. The entire staff of Thos. R. Birnie & Sons Ltd. were awesome to deal with; from the first phone call to the completion of the work. They were very knowledgeable and professional in all aspects of the job, estimating, attaining the required permits, carrying out the work, and scheduling the final inspection. My fiancé and I had an urgent issue with our plumbing. Both our sanitary pipe and storm pipe had been broken by the tree roots from the city tree. We initially had another plumbing company in to repair the sanitary pipe, but then learned we would need to line our pipes to our foundation wall and unfortunately that company did not provide such services. I called around to a few different plumbing companies in the Hamilton area; the first one being 5 Stinky. The lady on the phone initially told me she was booking into next week for someone to come by and give me a quote, but since our lawn was dug up and it was a pressing matter, she told me she would see if one of the managers would be able to swing by ASAP. I received a call back within 10 minutes and was told that someone would be by in the next 20 minutes. Bob Birnie came to my property for a full assessment. He was very knowledgeable and pleasant. I really appreciated him taking time out of his busy schedule to make such a prompt visit to my home. In the end, we went with a different plumbing services strictly because the second quote we received was better in terms of pricing. I really do appreciate their empathy and understanding of the urgency of our issue and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to friends and family!

An Excellent Experience

I had been experiencing root intrusion into my 70 year old transite pipe sewer line for a few years. The second last event occurred on a weekend evening so I called Mr Rooter for service. After augering the roots out of the sewer line I asked for an estimate to have a trenchless sewer reline done. (I had to rent an auger myself 10 months later to clear another root blockage) My investigation convinced me that the solid inner lining left in the sewer pipe after the relining was impermeable to roots. As the trees weren't going anywhere it needed to be done. The added bonus was not having to trench the length of my yard and deal with the gas pipeline running nearly on top of the sewer. Thos. R. Birnie & Sons Ltd was the company sent to perform the reline. All permits and locates were taken care of by the company. The installers, Tom B. And Jason S., were always willing to answer my questions and explain any aspect of the work done. Tom and Jason were careful to protect my lawn, house foundation and gas line from any damage while operating the excavator. Plywood sheets were laid down to pile dirt on and protect the lawn from the excavator tracks. I was never without a usable sewer for more than 4 hours. After the liner was installed I got to inspect the result live while they ran a camera through the repaired sewer. Pros: Eliminates the intrusion of roots. No danger to other underground services. Smaller excavation. Less cost than excavating/replacing with traditional pipe. Actual time to pull in the liner, inflate and cure was a little over an hour. I normally don't give reviews, however, this was the best repair experience I have had. After calling Thos. R. Birnie & Sons for St Catharines to repair both a broken kitchen faucet and a leaking basement shut-off valve which was used to turn off water to my outdoor faucet to prevent winter freezing, the tech arrived within a few hours. He first repaired a written quotation with options for both of the jobs and on acceptance he proceeded with the kitchen faucet. He had some parts on his truck for the faucet, however there was a small broken plastic part that he had to drive and find in town - the faucet works perfectly. When the tech inspected the basement shut-ff valve he told me it didn't need replacement - he just tightened the nut and demonstrated how it should function - no charge. I then asked if he could come to my mother's house and install a shut-off valve in her basement for her outdoor faucet as there was none. He took the time to drive there, did an inspection and told me no shut-off valve was required as the outdoor faucet was a "frost-free" type and explained how it worked - again no charge. This was the best service I've received from any repair company. Great tech, wonderful service. J. L.

We have (and enjoy) two old large crabapple trees on our front lawn. Unfortunately, trees and sewer pipes have trouble getting along. I noticed a small backup in our basement floor drain and called yesterday morning. It was urgent, but not an emergency as I was able to run a hose pipe down the drain and the water did go away (slowly). I explained this to the phone operator, and she said that she would put us down for Saturday morning. Remember, this is the long weekend too! Robert did a great job fixing our shower. We had handymen and other plumbing companies suggest we undergo a major renovation to our bathroom to fix our shower problem and that simply fixing it was not an option potentially costing our young family thousands of dollars. Robert arrived, could see that potentially there might be some major work however really took the time to figure out an alternative, took the time to shop for old plumbing parts more than once for us. Roy took his time (on a Friday afternoon) helping me to determine the placement of the valve so that I was fully informed before deciding whether or not to get the work done. He stayed for 1.5 hours answering all of my questions and discussing the issues. There was an issue with the downspouts of my home going straight into the ground. The previous plumber just looked at the age of my neighbourhood and assumed my downspouts would be tied into the sewer system, Roy asked how old my home was and, since it was built in the 1990's determined that most likely my rain water and sewer water run on two separate systems, so hopefully (not 100% guaranteed) I won't need to have to get my downspouts cut to spill onto the ground. These downspouts are in awkward locations that would affect entry into both entrances of my home as well as possibly affect my neighbours walkway as my property is higher than theirs. I would recommend Roy to anyone for an honest opinion and using his brain! Thanks Roy.

We have a deep well in the house and had no water from the well for about ten days. We tried but couldn't find any problems so we called Thos. R. Birnie & Sons. They called before a technician came in. Dale is a very friendly and knowledgeable technician, he explained and answered all our questions, inspected well cap, piping and pressure gauge, did testing on the pressure tank and pressure switch and replaced the faulty relay switch, quickly solved the problem. We were so happy to see water flowing out of faucets again. We were surprised when we were told the cost of the repair, considering of the cost of replacement part. Dale went out to get the part and fixed problem right way, and his professional and prompt serive is much valuable. So overall we were happy and satisfied. Thank you Dale!

We recently had Tom and Jason from Thos. R. Birnie replace the plumbing in our downstairs bath, laundry room, hall , and also install a backwater valve. Not only were they very friendly, but very professional as well. They cleaned up as they went and removed all the debris. I would recommend them for anybodys plumbing needs. A job well done!

My service by Robert S. was handled very efficiently and professionally. By him showing up promptly after my call it avoided a disaster since my drain to the city sewer was clogged and it just started to rain when he put the cable in the drain. The rain was just starting to back up and when the cable reached 20 feet down the clog was cleared. Thanks To Thos. R Birnie and Sons, especially Robert S.

Paul was a fantastic technician. He was right on time, and very thorough. I had a clogged toilet, which ended up being some weird reverse toilet that no one had ever seen before. He attempted to auger the toilet for quite a while to no avail. He then informed me that it was futile and that I would simply need to get a brand new toilet. I was concerned that it would take hours and that Paul wouldn't have time to install it. However to my surprise he went and picked up a new toilet, brought it back within 20 minutes and installed within another 20 minutes. I was so impressed with the speed and quality of the service. I am elated to have a brand new fully functioning toilet. I will most definitely be recommending Paul and Birnie & Sons Ltd to the everyone for their plumbing needs. I had a 5 STAR experience! I had no problem from when I called to make the appointment to when Mike & Jeff arrived. They were very nice gentlemen and did the work very well. I have used this company on other occasions and have had no problems with them.

It took him about 5 minutes to clear the problem. he then prepared my bill explaining what the costs covered and about the savings program. We were very impressed with the work that Robert S. did at our place. He found some challenges with the old plumbing but stuck at it until the job was done. Some parts were missing from the shower package; he returned promptly with the new part and installed it. Throughout, he was very friendly with us. Five stars!

We just had an excellent experience, when we called with a 'crappy" situation. (We couldn't help ourselves with the pun) . We had an emergency that required a professional touch. The booking process was smooth and we were called back exactly at the times we were advised of. They even tried getting us the help at the end of the day when we called last minute. We didn't' even expect that as an option as we were calling for a next day appointment. The two technicians that arrived, again exactly on time, did the repair at a very competitive price and addressed the issues that caused the "problem". Thanks for the help! I was having different companies come into my home to give me estimates on installing a Backwater Valve. All the other companies except two came in and just looked at the floor and gave me an estimate. Kevin was very courteous explained what he would like to do at no charge to me. He took a video of the inside of the main line. He reviewed it with me & then he emailed me a copy. He was friendly & explained that there was also a break in the main line - which I already knew was there, but I liked the idea that he was thorough & would not come to me later with some surprises. I was very impressed.

We were having a problem shutting off the water for the outside hose bib to prepare for the winter. We called Birnie Thos R & Sons to provide an estimate for the job. Mike arrived and reviewed our options and we hired him on the spot. Mike was knowledgeable and he answered all our questions - and taught us a thing or two. We are thankful he was able to do the work without having to cut a huge hole in our ceiling, which we were told could be needed by many plumbers we spoke to.
